Disease Prevention & Treatment in Koi

For Diseases to Occur... 3 Conditions Must be Present:

  1. Environmental Conditions
    Water Quality Conductive to Pathogen
  2. Pathogen Present
    Flukes, Anchor Worms, Costia, Bacteria, etc.
  3. Host (fish) Susceptible to Disease
    Weakened / Depressed Immune System

To Prevent Disease...
Break the Triangle!

Environment- "Maintain High Water Quality"
  1. Water Maintenance
    Mechanical Filter
    Biological Filter
    UV Filter
    Water Changes
  2. Oxygen Maintenance
    Large Surface Area
    Water Falls or Fountains
    Venturi
    Air Pump
  3. Pond Maintenace
    Surface Skimmer
    Bottom Drains
    Clean Under Pots & Statuary
    Construct to Avoid Surface Run Off
Pathogens- "Eliminate & Avoid"
  1. Parasites & Bacteria
    Microscopic identification of parasites
    .3% salt solution (3 pounds per 100 gallons) kills most parasites
    Fluke Tabs, Potassium Permanganate, Dimlin, etc. for others
    UV light helps control bacteria
  2. Plant Introduction
    Wash new plants thoroughly with formalin
    Know the source
  3. Fish Introduction
    Don't buy sick fish
    Know the Source
    Quarantine before adding
    Dip in .3% to .6% salt
    Treat with Fluke Tabs, Furazone Green, etc.
    Vaccinate
Host - "Support Fish Health & Immune System"
  1. AVOID STRESS TO FISH!
    Rapid Temperature Fluctuations
    Spawning
    Rough Surfaces in Pond
    Handling
    Transporting
    Blue Herons, Whooping Cranes, Dogs, & Children in Pond
  2. Proper Nutrition
    Feed a Quality Koi Food
    No Catfish or Trout Chow
    Now Corn in first 3 ingredients
    Follow Water Temperature Feeding Directions
  3. Supplement Immune System
    Vaccinate Annually
    Biogenic Performance Enhancer (Aquagen) (found only in Sho Koi "Impact" food)
    Supplement with Vitamin C
